Frequently asked questions
What are faculty led study abroad programs?
Faculty-led study abroad programs are transformative educational experiences led by university professors.
These programs usually last one to four weeks and provide a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in global learning, combining academic rigor with cultural exploration.
When can I run a faculty-led program?
We support year-round programming, including Maymester, Summer Sessions, Spring Break, Winter Session (J-Term), and Fall/Spring Embedded Programs.
How do I promote my study abroad program?
Promoting your program is key to signing up enough students for the trip. The best ways to promote a study abroad program are through presentations, events, fairs, and spreading the word as much as possible. Also, use attractive posters and flyers from your third-party provider as well as videos and testimonials from previous participants.
Can you customize field components to match our university's syllabus?
Absolutely. We do not offer cookie-cutter, rigid tours. Our team collaborates with you 12–18 months in advance to co-design experiential modules – such as guest lectures at partner universities, local NGO site visits, or hands-on research projects – that align directly with your course learning outcomes and syllabus requirements.
How many students can go?
We have a minimum of 6 students per trip up to 30 and beyond (we’d divide the group in this case). If you have a group size in mind, just let us know.
How long does it take to plan a study abroad program?
We recommend starting 12 to 18 months prior to departure to meet your campus approval deadlines, though we can accommodate shorter timelines.
How long do study abroad programs last?
How long a program lasts depends on you. We have run study abroad programs from 2 weeks to 6 weeks and remain flexible to the needs of each educational institute.
Do you offer faculty leader travel stipends & covered expenses
Yes. We build program budgets around your university’s preferred faculty-to-student ratio (e.g., 1:8 or 1:10). All faculty leader expenses (including accommodation, ground transport, meals, and emergency insurance) are fully covered in the program cost.
How do you support student recruitment and enrollment minimums?
Recruitment is critical to meeting your campus break-even numbers. Kagumu provides customized digital and print promotional toolkits (including co-branded flyers, slide decks, and social media graphics). We also co-host virtual info sessions for your students and help you communicate the academic and career ROI of the trip to boost enrollment.
Can our students use Title IV federal financial aid, scholarships, or GI Bill benefits?
Yes. Because your university awards academic credit for the faculty-led program, eligible enrolled students can typically apply their standard financial aid, institutional scholarships, or external awards (such as the Gilman Scholarship) to the program fee. We provide transparent, line-item itemized cost estimates early in the planning process to assist your financial aid and study abroad offices.
Does Kagumu offer any financial aid or scholarships?
Yes, we offer a green student scholarship that students can use towards any study abroad experience (not just Kagumu). You can find details of this grant opportunity by clicking here.
