Overview

Give your students a unique and first-hand insight into Pre-Hispanic ways of life with an experiential learning adventure around Mexico’s most magical regions.

Veering away from the hordes of tourists, students will explore ancient archaeological sites, delve into human origins and development, and enjoy unique sacred spiritual ceremonies.

During this 7-day itinerary, students will immerse themselves in rural Mexican family life, learning how to cook like an “abuela” whilst enjoying nature activities like volcano hikes, waterfall rappelling, and jungle walks.

Example Itinerary

Day 1: Arrivals (Mexico City)

Your dedicated Kagumu Adventures leaders will meet you at the transport terminal and take you to your accommodation for check-in via private airport transfer. Students get their first glimpse of the city with a walking tour with our local guides. Enjoy an evening meal and salsa class.

Overnight: 3* hotel in Mexico City

Day 2: Anthorology museum & sprirtual ceremony (Mexico City)

Explore the continent’s Pre-Hispanic origins with a visit to the world-class Anthropology museum. The group will enjoy an interactive tour with a local guide, witnessing some of the astounding artifacts and delving deeper into human development. Afterward, we take the students to the center of the city (Zocalo) to visit ancient ruins and enjoy a spiritual cleansing ceremony.

Day 3: Aztec farming & night hike (Tlaxcala)

After breakfast, students hop on a private bus transfer from Mexico City to Tlaxcala. Here we will learn, together with the indigenous communities, the ancient methods of Maiz cultivation and how corn and other locally grown products play an integral role within Mexican culture. After lunch, enjoy some downtime before a night hike up the “La Malinche” volcano.

Day 4: Step back into Pre-Hispanic times (Cantona)

Today, students explore one of the lesser-visited archaeological sites in Mexico. Away from the crowds of Chichén Itzá and Teotihuacán, students will visit Cantona – a Mesoamerican archaeological site that’s believed to be one of the largest and most urbanized cities in pre-Columbian Mexico. Our guides will bring the ancient site alive as students engage in ancient games and take part in a hands-on ceramic workshop. The group then continues on their journey through Puebla towards Cuetzalan.

Day 5: Self-sustaining community workshop (Cuetzalan)

Today, students will join the Tosepan Titataniske cooperative and help individual families in their production process of coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, honey, or piloncillo. Students will continue working with the families in their individual backyards and enjoy a unique traditional cooking experience with the locals. After dinner, students head off with their host families for an overnight stay.

Day 6: Jungle hike & Pre-Hispanic sauna (Cuetzalan)

Listed as one of Mexico’s Magical Towns, Cuetzalan boasts beautiful Spanish colonial architecture and a diverse mix of indigenous cultures. After some free time in the town, students get to grips with the town’s rugged natural side with a short jungle hike. Students tackle a unique and adrenaline-fuelled rappelling adventure at the waterfalls in the jungle close to Cuetzalan town.

Day 7: Departures (Mexico City)

We set off early to arrive in Mexico City in plenty of time to catch your flight back home. If there is time, we can take students to pick up some locally made gifts for family and friends.
