STEM Field Trips: The Best Destinations in Latin America

STEM field trips in Latin America

As STEM education becomes increasingly important in today’s world, many schools are seeking new and exciting ways to engage students in science, technology, engineering, and math.

For schools in the US and beyond, Latin America serves up a multitude of fantastic destinations. Latin America boast 5 of the world’s top 10 megadiverse countries, and it’s getting more accessible and offers an affordable option for educational trips.

But where to go? As Latin American specialists, we have compiled a list of the best destinations for a STEM trip:

Ecuador

Did you know Ecuador has a smaller land area than the state of Arizona? And it still outpaces the entire United States when it comes to biodiversity.

Remarkably, in just a few days you can visit UNESCO-listed Quito, the Andean Highlands and the Amazon rainforest. In the country’s capital, students explore innovative ways the city is pushing a circular economy methodology at the recycling lab. Then, a few hours away they can explore traditional Andean community life, discovering traditional farming methods.

The real gem, however, lies in the Amazon. Here, STEM learning comes alive with a visit to the Botanical garden which boasts an abundance of native flora and fauna. Then, head into the iconic Amazon on a walking tour led by native Kichwa people. Here you will find medicinal plants, you can discover ancient hunting techniques and even dine on bugs!

It’s a real surprise Colombia isn’t talked about as a leading STEM field trip destination. This South American country is the second most biodiverse country in the world and has come a long way in terms of improved infrastructure and security.

For technological advances and award-winning innovation, Medellin is the place to visit. Its famed cable car and metro systems have delivered remarkable social transformation. While pioneering urban gardening projects offer a glimpse into the city’s green future.

Not far from the city lies a natural reserve offering STEM learners the opportunity to learn about the ecology of a tropical forest. Here, students can raft under marble caves, zip line through the canopy and discover flora and fauna found only in this region.
