7 Reasons to Choose Peru for a Spanish Trip

Spanish trip school

Few countries are blessed with the cultural diversity, awe-inspiring landscapes, and historical intrigue as Peru.

For students wanting to improve their Spanish while experiencing a vastly different culture, this Latin American country should top the list.

Throw in jungle adventures, complete cultural immersions and a world of epic archaeological wonders then it’s understandable that Peru stands out as a great option for a Spanish trip.

In this blog, we detail 7 reasons why this Andean giant is perfect for your students to hone their language skills while taking part in life-changing adventures.

1: A Tapestry of Ancient Civilizations

Peru is a living testament to the grandeur of ancient civilizations.

From the awe-inspiring remnants of the Inca Empire in Cusco and Machu Picchu to the enigmatic Nazca Lines etched into the desert floor, students will be transported through time as they explore these incredible archaeological wonders.

Peru boasts a honed culture of excellent guides too, meaning that students will truly experience native traditions and ancient ways of living.

2: Authentic language immersion

What better way to accelerate language learning than by immersing students in an environment where they speak Spanish daily.

Give your students the experience of a lifetime with a homestay in Peru’s Sacred Valley. Here students will engage with their new families from morning until night. They’ll learn unique traditions like bag weaving, ceramics, cooking (often underground), and communicate in Spanish.

These genuine interactions will not only enhance students’ linguistic abilities but also develop their cross-cultural communication skills – highly sought after by top universities and future employers.

3: Learn by doing – world-class gastronomy classes

Peruvian cuisine has captured the attention of food enthusiasts worldwide, and rightly so.

From the piquant flavors of ceviche to the hearty comfort of aji de gallina, students can embark on a culinary odyssey that tantalizes their taste buds and expands their vocabulary.

We recommend visiting one of Peru’s colorful and vibrant markets, encouraging students to interact with vendors and acquire a new bank of vocabulary.

Expand their communication (and gastronomy skills) even further with a cooking class. Buen provecho!

4: Breathtaking Natural Diversity

Peru’s diverse landscapes are nothing short of spectacular.

Imagine your students practicing Spanish amidst the mist-shrouded peaks of the Andes, learning traditional hunting techniques from native communities in the Amazon rainforest, or exchanging pleasantries on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

These awe-inspiring backdrops provide an unparalleled backdrop for language learning and cultural exchange.

5: Inspiring Social Responsibility Projects

A Spanish language trip to Peru isn’t just about language acquisition; it’s also an opportunity to inspire compassion and social responsibility.

Your students can engage in community service projects, such as volunteering at an impactful NGO or participating in sustainable development initiatives.

These experiences will empower them to use their language skills for positive change while forming lasting connections with local communities.

6: Thriving Arts and Music Scene

Peruvian culture is a vibrant tapestry woven from a blend of indigenous, European, and African influences.

Students can explore this rich heritage through music, dance, and traditional art forms.

From the exuberant rhythms of marinera to the intricate craftsmanship of retablos, they’ll not only enrich their vocabulary but also gain a deeper appreciation for the cultural intricacies of the Spanish-speaking world.

7: More bang for your buck!

Compared to many of its Latin American counterparts, Peru remains an affordable option for a Spanish immersion trip.

The local currency is the Peruvian sol and as of August, 2023 is 3.71 to the dollar. This means that you can enjoy hostel or hotel stays for around $20 a night, dine on a full (and utterly delicious) lunch for around 5 bucks and even less if you head into traditional markets.

A money saving tip: veer away from the tourist heavy spots of Cusco, Lima, Aguas Calientes and visit different regions of Peru to get more bang for your buck.

The north is particularly interesting with Mendoza a great option and the ancient lost city of Kuélap as a much cheaper alternative to Machu Picchu.
