Overview

Bring your students’ learning of Pre-Hispanic cultures and communities to life while they explore pressing globals issues at first hand.

This unique trip in Peru’s Amazon region will take students to “Machu Picchu of the north” as they explore a spellbinding ancient citadel without the crowds.

During the adventure, students will also join a reforestation project, learn from inspirational women about gender equality and visit one of the world’s tallest waterfalls!

Example Itinerary

Day 1: Arrivals (Jaén)

Meet your local guide at the airport before taking a scenic drive (approx. 4.5 hours) through cloud forest valleys and the Utcubamba River. Arrive at Cocachimba for dinner and an introduction to the program and Kagumu methodology.

Overnight: Hotel in Cocachimba Village

Day 2: Visit one of tallest waterfalls in world (Chachapoyas)

This morning students enjoy a guided 5.5-km trek to Gocta Waterfall – one of the tallest in the world (771 m). After, we visit the viewpoint and meet entrepreneurs involved in local sustainability projects. Lunch at a community restaurant supporting women’s cooperatives followed by hands-on nature workshop and investigations into medicinal plants.

Day 3: Explore the Machu Picchu of the north (Kuelap)

Today students enjoy a guided visit of the Kuelap Archaeological Complex, learning about the Chachapoya civilization and ongoing restoration projects. Afterwards, the group enjoys lunch at a local family restaurant before a transfer to Chachapoyas with stops for photos of the Utcubamba valley.

Day 4: Gender equality & protecting a palm tree forest (Mendoza)

Today students visit Canyon of Sonche for panoramic views of the valley. This is followed by an interactive visit to a Women’s Pottery Cooperative to learn about ancestral clay pottery and gender equality. After lunch, travel to Rodriguez de Mendoza, stopping off at a local community to discover how a group of people are protecting a palm tree forest.

Day 5: Coffee farming & hot springs (Mendoza)

Students visit a local coffee farm, learning about how coffee has been transforming local lives and how they export organic coffee to the rest of the world. After lunch, the group enjoys a relaxing and refreshing afternoon/evening at the hot springs and dinner at a local hacienda.

Day 6: Market challenge & local music (Mendoza)

Today, students visit the local market in Mendoza where they take part in Kagumu’s unique market challenge. After some downtime, the group hops aboard our private transport for a transfer back to Jaén where they enjoy a farewell dinner with regional music and local ingredients.

Day 7: Departures

Our dedicated Kagumu leaders will take the group back to the airport in plenty of time for their flight home.

  • Learn about the history and traditions of Pre-Hispanic communities and cultures in the northern area of Peru.
  • Gain a greater understanding of global issues such as climate change and gender equality.
  • Learn about Pre-hispanic construction techniques and how it differs to today’s architecture and construction.
