Sustainability field trip: Panama

Overview

Expand your students’ knowledge of global issues and sustainability while delving into the rich cultural heritage, extraordinary wildlife, and exotic allure of Panama.

Students will participate in grassroots environmental and wildlife conservation projects, contributing to efforts to reforest degraded land, protect beaches, and safeguard incredible marine life.

Our itinerary can be customized to your needs and could include hands-on cooking classes, tours around Panama City, cycling, surfing, hiking through national parks, and releasing sea turtles into the ocean.

Example Itinerary

Day 1: Arrivals & intro to program (Panama City)

Our dedicated guides will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in Panama City.

To start the trip, you’ll try some mouth-watering Panamanian cuisine. Afterward, our guides will explain our unique methodology that teaches students about global issues while inspiring them to take positive action in their own lives. 

Day 2: Hike, forestry workshop, and boat tour (San Lorenzo)

We’ll hike in San Lorenzo National Park before joining local experts in a forestry workshop to replenish the degraded land. After lunch, we head out on a boat tour and get a glimpse of San Lorenzo castle.

Day 3: Turtle conservation (Mata Oscura)

After a bus trip to Mata Oscura, students will embark on a night tour of a sea turtle nesting beach, where they will witness the nesting process and assist in the rescue and relocation of nests (eggs).

Day 4: Turtle conservation & cultural immersion (Mata Oscura)

This morning, under the guidance of local foundations, students will help release hatching sea turtles into the ocean.

After lunch, the group will discover the traditional roots of Mata Oscura. We’ll visit the houses of local people, where you’ll learn how to make a typical Panamanian hat and participate in a cooking class.

Day 5: Hiking up volcano (India Dormida)

We’ll set off to the India Dormida volcano where students will take a short hike through dense forests, past waterfalls and streams, and up to breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the valley below.

Students will enjoy some free time and dinner before staying overnight in India Dormida.

Day 6: Cycling & cooking challenge (India Dormida)

Students wake up early to cycle around the base of the majestic volcano. After lunch, we’ll depart for Panama City, where we’ll join a local collective and take part in a cooking class.

Day 7: Panama Canal & chocolate tasting (Panama City)

Students will discover the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal before taking an interactive tour of the city’s fascinating old town. They’ll put their new Spanish-speaking skills to the test with a coffee and chocolate-tasting session before our final dinner of the trip.

Day 8: Souvenir shopping & departures

You will have time to visit nearby shops to purchase gifts for friends and family. Our team will then take the group to the airport and only leave when the students are safely through the gate.
