Overview

Give your students a deeper understanding of Colombia’s public health system and offer them an insight into how Indigenous communities still use ancient techniques to care for members of their community.

Students will enjoy unique cross-cultural exchanges with local communities as well as take part in activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, and Afro-Caribbean dancing!

The group will delve into the history of Colombia’s Caribbean coast with a walking tour of Santa Marta and feel the rhythm of Cartagena with cumbia and champeta classes.

Example Itinerary

Day 1: Arrivals & introduction (Santa Marta)

Our friendly team will meet you at airport arrivals and take you on private transport to your hotel for check-in. You’ll dine like a local and then enjoy an introduction to the program.

Day 2: City tour & bag-weaving workshop (Santa Marta)

You’ll discover the intriguing history of Colombia’s Caribbean coast with a fun and interactive walking tour. After a fish lunch, we’ll visit the Gold Museum for a unique insight into local Indigenous cultures with a unique bag-weaving workshop.

Day 3: Health in local communities & kayaking (Santa Marta)

Students will gain a unique insight into how sacred leaders known as Mamos and Sagas treat members of their own communities, learning about their ancient healing techniques and discovering the curative properties of medicinal plants. We’ll enjoy an evening kayak to a secluded beach to watch the Caribbean sunset!

Day 4: Hike in Tayrona National Park (Santa Marta)

Today students explore Santa Marta’s fantastic national park – Tayrona. We’ll hike through thick jungle to reach Caribbean beaches where you’ll swim and enjoy wildlife such as toucans, monkeys, and caiman. We’ll have a fish lunch before heading back to our beach-side eco-lodge.

Day 5: Explore Colombia's Caribbean Gem (Cartagena)

We’ll take a bus to Cartagena where we’ll explore the UNESCO-listed old town, learning about its formation after the Spanish conquest and its modern-day influences such as the iconic writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Students will also witness the impact of mass tourism and the consequences of gentrification in the street-art emblazoned area of Getsemani. 

Day 6: NGO visit on public health (Cartagena)

Students will learn about the long-term socioeconomic impact of teenage pregnancy in Cartagena and explore sustainable (and measurable) solutions delivered by an inspiring foundation. Students take part in an interactive workshop, exploring ways to break the poverty cycle for young mothers. 

Day 7: Public Health in Afro-Caribbean community (Cartagena)

Today you will dance to the Caribbean rhythms of cumbia and explore the origins of champeta by joining our partners in the Batambora school in the fishing village of La Boquilla. We end the final afternoon of the program by descending into a mud volcano, where students will cleanse themselves after a memorable adventure. 

Day 8: Departures (Cartagena)

Your dedicated Kagumu tour guides will accompany you to your transport terminal and wave you off at the gate.
